AMEA Power Enters Second Phase of Agadir Desalination Project in Morocco with Major Wind Farm Collaboration

AMEA Power, one of the fastest-growing renewable energy companies in the region, has announced its strategic move into the second phase of the Agadir desalination project in Morocco. This phase marks a significant step in expanding the facility’s capabilities and embracing sustainable energy sources.

To power the plant, AMEA Power will leverage its 150 MW wind project based in Laayoune, developed in collaboration with Cox. Once operational, this initiative will become AMEA Power’s first water desalination plant in Africa, underlining the company’s commitment to expanding its portfolio beyond energy into vital water solutions for the continent.

Upon full completion of its expansion, the Agadir desalination project will boast a total capacity of 400,000 m³/day, positioning it as one of the largest desalination facilities in Africa. While Cox handled the development and retains ownership of the project’s first phase, the second phase will be delivered by a newly formed joint venture—with AMEA Power joining as both investor and energy supplier via the co-developed wind farm.

This project is the inaugural enterprise under the strategic joint venture agreement signed between the two companies in May 2025. It highlights their shared ambition to deliver large-scale integrated infrastructure that links water and renewable energy solutions for greater sustainability.

With a total investment for this phase—including both the increased desalination capacity and the new wind power facility—set to exceed €250 million, the project is poised for major regional impact. The desalination expansion is projected to be operational between 2026 and 2027, while the associated wind farm is scheduled to come online in 2027.

Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, said, “Our entry into the second phase of the Agadir desalination project in Morocco, under the Water Alliance Ventures platform, reflects AMEA Power’s ambition to address both water and energy challenges through integrated solutions. This project is not only our first entry into the water sector in Africa – it is also a powerful example of what long-term partnerships can achieve for sustainable development across the region”.

This initiative reinforces AMEA Power’s commitment to Morocco, which remains a core market within the company’s broader strategy, complementing several already developing clean energy projects across the nation.
