UAE’s Zayed Sustainability Prize Sets New Records, Empowering Global Innovation for a Sustainable Future
As the UAE prepares to reveal the latest winners of the Zayed Sustainability Prize next month, the pioneering award cements its place as one of the world’s most influential platforms for promoting sustainable development and real-world community impact.
Established in 2008 to honor the legacy and values of the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Prize has, over 17 years, become a catalyst for innovation, transforming communities in over 150 countries.
The 2026 awards cycle has achieved historic participation, with 7,761 submissions from 173 countries—a 30 percent increase from last year. Innovators are competing in six categories: Health, Food, Energy, Water, Climate Action, and Global High Schools.
This surge highlights the growing international interest in scalable, high-impact solutions, with a notable rise in entrants using advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and fintech tools.
Analysis reveals that 85 percent of this year’s submissions came from developing or emerging economies, underscoring the Prize’s increasing importance where sustainable solutions are most essential. The top contributing countries—India, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, Brazil, and Indonesia—demonstrate a global tapestry of innovation.
The Health category alone saw more than a 60 percent increase in entries, showcasing a strong focus on AI-enabled diagnostics, wearable technologies, and decentralized medical care. In Energy, the spotlight was on thermal energy storage, advanced low-carbon fuels, and next-generation energy systems. As for Water, entries emphasized expanding freshwater access via atmospheric water generation and low-energy desalination.
Since its inception, the Zayed Sustainability Prize has honored 128 winners, whose solutions have impacted more than 400 million people worldwide. These include projects in rural electrification, clean water access, climate-resilient agriculture, affordable healthcare innovation, and youth-led sustainability programs.
Examples abound: off-grid solar networks in Kenya and Rwanda, community water purification in Fiji, and food-security initiatives in India and Colombia. The Prize consistently empowers projects with measurable, long-term benefits.
A cornerstone of this legacy is the Global High Schools category, supporting students who design and lead sustainability projects within their own communities. Across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Pacific, schools have implemented solar installations, recycling programs, clean water systems, and have embedded sustainability into their educational programs—cultivating a new generation of environmentally conscious leaders.
These efforts are celebrated annually at the Zayed Sustainability Prize Awards Ceremony, part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The event brings together heads of state, ministers, international organizations, innovators, and youth leaders to honor 11 outstanding winners, reflecting an ongoing commitment to an inclusive and sustainable world. The Prize also continues to pay tribute to the enduring vision of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, inspiring collective action on the global sustainability agenda.
The 2026 winners will be announced on 13th January 2026, during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. Winners in the Health, Food, Energy, Water, and Climate Action categories will each secure a prize of US$1 million, while Global High Schools winners—representing the world’s regions—will each receive US$150,000 to implement or scale their sustainability initiatives.
With record participation, rising global engagement, and a clear shift toward technology-enabled solutions, the upcoming awards promise to mark yet another milestone, driving impactful, inclusive, and scalable progress for societies worldwide.
