Venezuela and Qatar Move to Consolidate Strategic Alliances
Caracas, February 18 – Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez received the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, at Miraflores Palace in Caracas. The official meeting aimed at consolidating and expanding strategic alliances across multiple areas of shared development.
The Qatari leader arrived in the Venezuelan capital on an official visit and was welcomed by Venezuela’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, along with other government authorities. The visit marks a new chapter in the strengthening of bilateral relations between Caracas and Doha.
Expanding a Comprehensive Cooperation Agenda
During their meeting at the presidential palace, both leaders reviewed a shared cooperation agenda designed to deepen strategic ties and identify new areas for collaboration. According to official sources, discussions focused on enhancing partnerships in key sectors such as energy, tourism, fisheries, agriculture, culture, and education.
Venezuela and Qatar maintain broad-based cooperation in areas that include agriculture, tourism, trade, and energy. The latest high-level exchange underscores both nations’ intention to further diversify and solidify their economic and institutional engagement.
A Relationship with Historical Foundations
Diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Qatar were formally established in 1973. However, ties strengthened significantly from 1999 onward, following the beginning of the Bolivarian Revolution led by former President Hugo Chávez (1954–2013).
In recent years, bilateral relations have reached what officials describe as a new level of friendship and cooperation. This momentum was reaffirmed during the 2022 official visit of Venezuela’s constitutional president, Nicolás Maduro, to Doha, followed by successive high-level exchanges between authorities from both countries.
Strategic Vision Going Forward
The latest meeting reflects a shared vision to promote sustainable development and expand economic opportunities between the two nations. As energy producers with strategic positions in global markets, both Venezuela and Qatar are well positioned to collaborate in hydrocarbons and related industries, while also exploring diversification into tourism, agriculture, cultural exchange, and educational cooperation.
The visit signals not only diplomatic continuity but also a forward-looking approach to strengthening South-South partnerships and reinforcing strategic cooperation in an evolving global landscape.
